End of the year at OTE´s organized markets marked by records

In 2019, the short-term electricity and gas markets organized by OTE are experiencing a significant increase in trading. We are pleased with the interest of traders in trading on our platforms. The successful integration of the intraday electricity market at the end of November this year also contributed to this increase.

The day-ahead electricity market, which reached the five-year anniversary of its interconnection with the Slovak, Hungarian and Romanian power markets (4M MC) on 19 November, has shown an upward trend in recent years. On Monday, December 16, 2019, the volume of trades concluded on this platform exceeded the volume of the year 2018, when the total amount of electricity traded was 22,892 GWh. Currently, 23 069 GWh of electricity was traded during the period from 1 January 2019 to 19 December 2019.

Currently, 935 GWh of electricity was traded on IM Power, which is 385 GWh more than in 2018, representing an increase of 70% compared to 2018.

Overall, on the day-ahead and intra-day electricity markets, a total of 24,009 GWh was traded from 1 January 2019 to 19 December 2019, which represents 1.5 times the annual production of the Temelín NPP (15.66 TWh in 2018) and also 38.6% of the domestic net consumption in 2018.

A record annual amount of gas was reached on the intraday gas market as of 30.10.2019. The current amount of traded gas for 2019 is 4,414 GWh, which represents a 44% increase compared to 2018. Additionally, there was an 18% increase compared to 2017, when the highest amount of gas was traded in the history of the intraday gas market.

OTE believes that this trend will continue. “The results achieved are both a commitment and a challenge for us to bring reliable and user-friendly solutions to market participants,” says Jakub Šrom, Head of Energy Markets department.

Igor Chemišinec, a Member of the Board of Directors at OTE added: "We would also like to thank everyone for trusting in our trading platforms and the whole of OTE, and at the same time we would like to wish our market participants a merry Christmas and all the best in 2020."

For the upcoming period, OTE is working on further integration of the day-ahead electricity market. At the same time, we are responding to current digitization trends and service standards in this area by developing new trading opportunities on our short-term electricity and gas markets. An example is the newly available mobile application for trading on the intraday gas market.
